Choosing a school in the Colchester area

Oxford House School

Choosing the right school for your child can be a confusing time, with so many options in the Colchester area it can be hard to know what to look for and what factors to prioritise. If you are considering private preparatory schools, then with Oxford House School, there is no need to make any compromises.

Academic prowess

When considering primary schools in Colchester, a key concern for all parents will be the academic success of the school and inspection results. Oxford House is the best school in Essex for 11+ examination results and this is an achievement that we are working hard to ensure we maintain. Every year, the majority of our pupils gain places at the local grammar schools, and this year is no exception.

It is not only our eldest students that are delivering exceptional results, pupils in all year groups from Form I upwards are assessed using GL Progress Tests in English and Maths. These standardised, externally marked tests are produced by GL Assessment and allow individual pupils’ performance to be assessed against national benchmarks, you can see the great results here.

Our inspection results are something we are extremely proud of, “The quality of teaching and learning is outstanding” SIS Report 2016. We work hard to produce highly confident and articulate children as a result of their education with us.

Specialist Subjects

Our fantastic results are testament to our dedicated teaching staff who execute a broad and inspiring curriculum. We actively promote Music, Dance and Drama, these form a key area of education designed to develop high self-esteem in every pupil.

Sport plays a vital part in keeping our pupils fit and healthy. All pupils benefit from physical education. Pupils are given coaching in an extensive range of games including swimming and outdoor sports at our local leisure centres and sports ground.

French is taught from Form II through to Form VI by our enthusiastic specialist French teacher. Our Forms V and VI are given the opportunity to practice the language skills they have learnt by taking part in a range of French based events and activities throughout an allocated week during the school year.

Extra curricular activities and extended care

If you need to drop your child off a little earlier, that is no problem. We understand busy modern family life, which is why we provide a breakfast club, where children are provided with a range of healthy breakfast options and the club starts from 7:30am.

After school, children can stay unti 4.45pm in our After School Activity Club. There are also a range of extra curricular activities on offer such as French, Cookery, Multisports, Dance and Fencing – classes are run by subject specialists. Peripatetic instrumental music lessons are also on offer.

Our ethos
The school motto is ‘Labore Confecto Gaudentes’ which means ‘joy in achievement’, this is the foundation of everything we do here at Oxford House. We want our students to reach their full potential and find the joy in doing so.

We want our pupils to move on to their senior schools as confident, independent, numerate, literate and well-rounded individuals who take pride in everything they do. We encourage high standards in behaviour and manners as well as in academic achievement.

If you are ready to look at primary school options for your child and don’t want to compromise on your high standards, we would love for you and your son or daughter to visit us at an open day or request a prospectus to see the opportunities waiting for your child here at Oxford House.
