Oxford House has a breath of character, style and imagination for utilising all spaces.
Situated close to Colchester town centre our pupils benefit from being educated in our unique and beautiful Victorian mansion. The classrooms, Hall and playground are compact but allow for freedom and learning to excel as recognised in our recent SIS inspection. Our air conditioned ICT suite comprises of 18 computers to allow each child to progress and develop their ICT skills at their own pace. Our specialist teacher ensures our curriculum uses a wide variety of programmes including Scratch and Bee-Bot for programming and coding.
Every pupil in Form III and above receives their own personal laptop. This opens up additional methods of teaching, assessment and feedback, and provides every pupil with greater ownership for their learning. It engages pupils with the technology they are likely to use in the future at secondary school or university. Pupils are provided with a Microsoft 365 account, allowing them to access software packages such as Teams, Word and PowerPoint for the duration of their time at Oxford House School.
We are fortunate to provide our pupils with the opportunity to express themselves creatively on stage at a local renowned theatre, this is a long tradition established by the original founders of the school and is always eagerly attended by parents, family and friends. A download of the production can be purchased after the event as a memory of your child’s outstanding performance.
During the Christmas period, lower school and upper school pupils participate in the annual carol service at a church in the town centre. This is a beautiful building with amazing acoustics which heighten the pupil’s singing voices resulting in an emotional experience. The Christmas after school club pupils make Christmas tree decorations to adorn our tree for the Christmas Tree Festival held by the church which is then visited by members of the local community.
Sport plays a vital part in keeping our pupils fit and healthy. All pupils benefit from a one hour timetabled physical education lesson on-site taught by our specialist PE teacher. In addition, pupils from Form I upwards participate weekly in a wide variety of sports such as football, tag rugby, hockey, atheletics, cricket and rounders at the nearby playing fields of Colchester Royal Grammar school, a 5-minute walk from the school.
From Form II upwards pupils enjoy weekly swimming lessons from professional, highly qualified and motivated instructors. The younger pupils benefit from a one to one teaching approach at the Leisure World teaching pool and our older children, more advanced with their swimming, have use of the newly built Garrison Olympic-sized swimming pool. Both facilities are clean, spacious, bright and safe environments for the children to learn. The children travel to and from the venues using our yellow bus service.
