A special visit to the Reception class.

To support our work on animals, on Thursday the 12th January Reception had some very special visitors of both the two-legged and four-legged kind! Mrs James, whose daughter Mae is in Form II, a local vet along with her veterinary nurse, a show chicken and Mae’s dog, came in to work with us.

After an introductory talk the children were put into small groups and had the opportunity to complete a range of tasks. The tasks included looking closely at x-rays of the dog and chicken, practising applying bandages to injured ‘soft toy  animals’, correctly placing the dog’s organ on a cut out model. The highlight of the morning for most of the children was having an opportunity to stroke the dog and a photo opportunity whilst holding the chicken. Mae also joined us at the end of the workshop to talk to the children about her chicken and dog.

For taking part in the work shop each child was given a certificate and animal gift bag.  In addition, post the visit the children were asked to take part in an animal colouring competition. Their entries are currently on display at the veterinary surgery and based on customer votes we are waiting to hear the outcome.

The children had a fantastic morning and learnt a great deal. To say thank you the children wrote individual thank you notes which were incorporated into a large class  thank you card which we then sent to Miss James and Miss Emrich.
